Eric Ewazen's Concerto for Marimba performed by Eric Segerstrom! This is from Juilliard Pre-College's open concerto competition on January 30, 2010. It's a cut from the first movement, as that night I only had 18 minutes to perform a 30 minute piece. Thanks to everyone who came/is watching this! Apparently I was much less accurate than I thought...

  • You are amazing, I had never heard such a beautiful, graceful song on the marimba. How Long did it take you to prepare for the song.? Any tips on holding two mallets in each hand. Did I say how amazing you are?

Haha...Thank you. This took me about 4 1/2 months to fully prepare. I never ended up having to play the whole thing, however. I'm not too sure what tips I can give, but just keep working on it. The Stevens book is very helpful for building up technique and strength.

  • I havnt played mallets for that long, but am in the a youth symphony. Im playing delecluse and carter level stuff on timpani and snare, and being at the precollege, do you really have to be amazing in all 3? Ive played pines of rome and flight of the bumblebee...thats where I am. Would that be good enough so that in two years Id be at a good enough level? Sorry babling lol.

It's all in practicing. Just practice your butt off and you can play anything.

    Haha thank you! I'm 17.

  • Hey, nice job. Accuracy is such a monumental problem on this piece considering that, as marimbists, it's basically our equivalent of a Mozart piano concerto (both in that the piece is, on a surface level, simplistically tonal, and in the overall texture of the marimba part). Stick with it; it's a piece that's worth it if you know that you're in it for the long haul and maintain it as a consistent part of your repertoire. =)
