My great grandfather (Richard Hart Cartridge) owned Conrad Cottage opposite the lifeboat house. It is the white one on the corner. It was said that there was a tunnel in the courtyard and it connected with Baiter. Dad told of the water pouring into the cracks between the paving slabs when it rained. But yes there are tales of smuggling and yes the Cartridges would have to be involved in it somewhere. But no one in their right mind would unload goods in the middle of the town avoiding scrutiny.
The tunnel split one heading towards the sports hall one the other direction ( to the church i would imagine) v muddy and stank of seaweed on a hot day. The one under the sports hall was bricked up after around 20 meters and the one to the church was impossible to walk down due to mud. we went back week later but the lock had been changed, must of been all the muddy foot prints around the door lol.
pretty spooky down there. War tunnel? judging by the old bricks i thought it mayb b4 the war?
@ben1983drew Yea it stinks, we went down before i left the school one night in 2008, as we stayed late everyday to clean the class rooms ect as a part time job. There is a door just on the left before the stair way up to SSC, been cleaners we had the keys to all the doors. when opened there are immediate stepps going down into darkness, and similarly to you, one night we went down tooled up with tourches and wellie boots, the tunnel was wider then the part you must of been in.
@krazyrj yes back in1999 before i left the manor school me and a m8 snuck into the school all tooled up, and removed some stone slabs in one of the fire places, we dug out some breeze blocks then we got in the tunnel, it was so tight and had to walk side ways and smelt like shit, we never went all the way down as it was sketchy
have been very intrested in this for a while, and have been looking into it, but to no avail, do you know anyhting about the tunnels nearby at lytchett manor house??
@ben1983drew would be interesting to see, can you post a grid reference ? or eastings and northings? Cheers
