http://www.ParrotsHealth.com with bird vet specialist Dr Ross Perry advises that you replace doweling perches with natural branches and twigs of different diameters from non-poisonous shrubs and trees. For budgies and other small parrots, finches and canaries small prunings from Melaleuca and Callistemon spp. (commonly known as bottlebrushes, Tea trees and paperbarks in Australia), Casuarina (She-oak), Grevillea, Mulberry, Lemon, and various rough barked Eucalypts (gumtrees) provide excellent twigs and branches that can serve as toys and /or perches for many caged birds.

  • I have not seen heated perches and in Australia we probably wouldn't use them a lot. However, I imagine that they might be of use for budgies with arthritis or that are very sick. For sick birds I usually provide a desk lamp as a source of heat at one end of a favourite perch so that the birds can choose their favoured temperature by moving in close or away from it. It is rarely necessary here for healthy birds. Ross

  • Which tree branches are non toxic and safe for budgies? Is silver maple safe?

  • @FatJan Jan, I am not certain with some of the usa and european trees... I have compiled about 150 pages on poisonous plants and don't recall silver maple as being listed as toxic to budgies. Ross

  • What is your opinion on a heated perch for my budgie? Not as his only perch of course.
