One of the more notorious coaster demolitions came on Wednesday, June 29th, 1979 when moviemakers filming "The Death of Ocean View Park" used more than 88 sticks of dynamite and plastic explosives to try and tumble the Rockets 51 year old wooden structure. After 2 failed efforts, a little help from a bulldozer finally brought her down while hundreds of onlookers stood by and watched. This coaster certainly put of a fight, but at least she went down with a little Hollywood style.

  • That rollercoaster is beautiful. What a shame it had to be destroyed. I can't watch....

  • i miss going on this

  • everything dies...even a machine too:/

  • it was an awesome park. I lived in Norfolk,VA. for a minute...a Navy Brat. One of my few journeys to norfolk as a kid I went to Ocean View Park and rode the scary but sturdy Rocket more than a few times and was fortunate to witness the movie process of blowing up the famous rollercoaster plus getting Mike Connors autograph on a napkin plus keeping a piece of the Rocket.....Great Fun ("

  • Sad vid to watch but I really enjoyed the use of King Crimson.

  • @pkat1955 Wow, you must feel fortunate to have ridden it. If i could go back in time to ride any coaster, Rocket would be my #1 choice! the airtime looked insane on the speed dip. And yes you are right, this was the third attempt. It's a shame such a great coaster was destroyed, It looked like one of the best in the world

  • CCI classic.....people saved the Cyclone, why not this one!!? Wooden coasters are HISTORY!! It hurts not only ACErs' hearts, but also coaster fans from all over the world!!

  • The Ocean View Amusement Park was also one of the parks featured in the making of the movie "Rollercoaster". It was the last time the park was open to the public

  • @Mike8291 lol you`r malls are failing too. there demolishing them now

  • What a waste of wood!! could have been re-used in housing schemes as its well seasoned less likely to warp anymore or for old building restoration projects
