Emory's nationally recognized, award winning debate team, The Barkley Forum, pioneered debate as a civic activity when Executive Director Melissa Wade created the first Urban Debate League in the country. Along with a few dedicated teachers, Wade partnered with the Atlanta Public Schools and brought debate into high schools and middle schools. Urban Debate expanded quickly and now serves thousands of underserved students across the country.
