Tagumeño revelers erupted in loud cheers as they witnessed the passing of another year and welcomed the year 2012 with a big bang through a 30-minute grand fireworks display set up by the City Government of Tagum.

No less than City of Tagum Mayor Rey T. Uy led the estimated more than 5,000 people who witnessed the city's yearly tradition right in front of the newly-opened Gaisano Mall of Tagum along Daang Marharlika National Highway.

This year's display, which was billed at P 300,000 pesos, illuminated the sky in colors of blue, red, orange, violet and yellow with pyrotechnics such as meteor shower, cyclone warp, jupiter storm, guardians of the galaxy, earth under attack, 3 destination x, white strobe, chrysanthemum mines, dragon eggs and mickey mouse, among others.

Christian Berico, a psychology student in Saint Mary's College and one of the many Tagumeños who witnessed the event, threw both arms in the air as the New Year began. "Maganda 'to compared last year and it was an amazing experience since we weren't able to purchase our own fireworks," he said in an online interview.

A video of the fireworks display uploaded on popular video sharing site YouTube became an instant hit online, giving Tagumeños here and abroad the chance to view the revelries on their computers.

"Proud to be Tagumeño!," wrote one user on the YouTube page entitled Tagum City Fireworks 2012.mp4. Another comment said that Tagum's grand fireworks display may not equal that of London's and Sydney's, but they are proud that Tagum City was able to have it as a way of welcoming another year.

"The fireworks display to bid 2011 adieu was still a crowd-drawer. Perhaps, it was a way for people not to spend anymore on fireworks. Malaking katipiran na, enjoy ka pa," wrote Tess Doce Halili via facebook.

"Hindi na kami bumili pa ng mga paputok kasi nanuod na lang kami," said 16 year-old Glen Andrion, adding that "talagang sulit ang ginastos ng city dahil alam kong hindi lang ako ang humanga sa kagandahan nun kundi ang lahat ng mga Tagumeños."

Other Tagumeños can't help but compare it to the world-renowned "Disney in Stars" of Hong Kong Disneyland.
"My family and I had a chance of watching HK Disneyland's "Disney in the Stars" Fireworks and I can say, minus the light & sound effects, music & voice-over narrating famous Disneyland quotes & stories, Tagum City's 2012 fireworks display was equally spectacular."

Intermittent rain showers did not hamper the show with a live band courtesy of a popular liquor brand, drawing people not only from Tagum but from other cities and municipalities as well.
