2004.12.14. Over the course of three months in early 2002, Antarctica's Larsen B Ice Shelf broke into many pieces, releasing several thousand square kilometers of ice into the ocean, and causing acceleration of adjacent glaciers. Although speeding up and enhanced discharge of glaciers surrounding the Larsen B Ice Shelf may not significantly raise sea level, glaciers associated with larger Antarctic ice shelves could have a more pronounced effect. This animation was created using imagery from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) instrument on NASA's Terra satellite.
