This is a casual walk through Ice Man's stage in my WIP Mega Man 1 hack. The goal of this hack is to work within the hardware constraints faced by the original development team while also creating a better and more polished gaming experience. In addition to the obvious, there are a substantial number of smaller assembly changes demonstrated in the video that I hope veteran Mega Man gamers will notice and appreciate. I work on this game in my spare time when motivation strikes, so it's mostly slow going. As such, I can't predict any sort of release date.

  • That was wicked cool. :D Also, nice touch having GutsMan as a mid-stage boss. Does this effect happen as a result of having already beat him, or is it totally independent of that?

  • Thanks for your interest! I'm glad you like it.

    Having midbosses was my solution to Mega Man 1's quirky repeat boss battles in Wily's castle, which I wasn't a fan of. I figured this would make my stages a little more interesting. Midbosses take 2x damage compared to their end-of-stage counterparts and are often fought in interesting arenas (like underwater, for Guts Man). Beating a midboss gets you some health and access to the midpoint, and you don't fight them again later in Wily's castle.

  • A good hack indeed..Enemies die from stepping or getting near the mines...you can cancel the attack with your own..this is how Megaman should have been.. Great work -seriously :)

  • Glad you noticed those little tweaks. I really enjoy them in practice and wish Mega Man games typically had these features. I've done quite a few little gameplay changes like those that don't affect much, but aren't things I like playing without. They add a lot to the game, in my opinion. :)

  • I'm guessing these are the changes: Robot Master Miniboss(Gutsman, in this case), ability to destroy enemy projectiles, and those little ground thingies following you.

  • Yep. Also, Mega Man and all sprites on the screen are independently affected by water (lower gravity when underwater, which didn't happen before), there's a splash animation, and enemies die when they collide with spikes. Plus lots of other little things, too (pause menu redesign, lives under the health bar, color deemphasis, etc). The real biggies are the ones you noticed and the water and spike interactions.

  • You should change the Sound. if you were messing with fcuex with this hack and you found a hexline that makes sounds.
