THIS UPLOAD IS A TRIBUTE TO LEN MAGEE. In the eighties, as a young Christian, Len's music had helped me grow in my spiritual life. His songs are like good sermons, his lyrics are testimonies of God's peace, love, joy and power, enriching to the listener, empowering and encouraging. The following is adapted from his official website, written by his very own sister:

Len Magee, Christian singer and song writer, lives on the Gold Coast of Australia, where he and his wife, Heather, pastor a small fellowship. Although Len produced most of his music between 1973 and 1981, many people have still not forgotten the impact his ministry had on their spiritual lives. His music became well known in Christian circles around the English speaking world. God took a suicidal, hippy drug addict and turned him into a man who lives to preach the Gospel. The seven year old child sent from his home and family to the other side of the world where he was raised in an institution, became, through the grace of God, a minister, teacher and pastor, as well as a loving husband and father. The deep pain and great joys of Len's life resonate through the words of his songs, which are still quoted today; but more importantly, his honesty allows God's Spirit to communicate deep truths to the listener. His is the kind of music that is easy to listen to and impossible to forget. Whilst it will warm the hearts of those of us old enough to remember it from the first time around, the discerning younger listeners will also find it engaging. (Adapted - Lesley R Wells)

Freedom Road

1 Freedom Road was calling me and all my friends
The sun and the breeze upon your face
But I find that Freedom Road ain't got no end
Just lots of souls not going any place
So I'm leaving on the nine forty-five
I hope that train is gonna be on time
Then I guess I'll have to try and hitch a ride
My dreams have gone, the weather's not so fine

Chorus
Freedom Road, oh heavy load
And there's such an awful price to pay
So I'm telling you my friend
This road has got no end
It's lead me and so many folk astray
So I'm turning back to find some other way

2 It's been said that all that glitters is not gold
And my friends spoke of gaining inner wealth
But when I was tired and hungry, freezing cold
I found that I was running from myself
So I'm leaving on the nine forty-five
I just can't wait to get up on that train
I think of home, my bed so warm and dry
I'm getting tired of standing in the rain
Chorus

3 A man gave me a Bible yesterday
I sat right down and read it on the road
I got peace in finding Jesus is the Way
And somewhere back I left my heavy load
So I'm leaving on the nine forty-five
And I ain't coming back no more
I've discovered that Jesus is alive
And He's the one my soul's been looking for
Chorus

Freedom Road, oh heavy load
And there's such an awful price to pay
So I'm telling you my friend
This road has got no end
It's lead me and so many fold astray
But I'm glad I found that Jesus is the Way

It was part of the sound track to my daily walk with Christ during my College life. • Thanks for leading me to this song and it is so beautiful. I am still in a learning stage in the christian world. God had called me back a long time ago but I kept running away from his flock of sheep while I was back in Malaysia but I made a promise to Him I will not run again I told Him I am the lost sheep and is now returned to the flock cos he is my sherpard/ Refer to Plasm 23.

  • Hearing this song again has brought back many memories. I first heard Len at the Royal Albert Hall Easter Saturday 1973 (74?) Elim rally singing 'Is it nothing to you' I spent a few years belting out his songs as a gospel singer in Luton. I have just be given permission to use some of his songs on a new album to be recorded next year.. Thank you so much for the upload keep them coming. It good to know Jesus is 'only a prayer away'

  • Dear friend, Thanks very much for the reply. The cassette that I had from Len Magee was entitled The Prince of Peace and included most of the songs you have including the one called The Prince of Peace, beginning like this: We shall come down....like the rain in spring....like dew in the meadows.....etc.

Thank you so much for taking the time and answering me!

    God bless you abundantly!
