Working with your firearm at a shooting competition isn't only a great way to get to know your weapon, it's also a great way to get to know other shooters. Whether you prefer a pistol or a rifle, shooting on your feet or on a horse, these competitions have something to offer everyone. The Beginner's Guide to Shooting Competitions series takes you through a variety of matches to help you find an event that's right for you.
What is Steel Challenge?

  • @MrWallaberry As long as you have a holster for it, yep it'll be put in 'Production' or 'SSP'

  • Would a Beretta Px4 be a viable pistol for these competitions?

  • I love these intro to USPSA, IDPA, & Steel Challenge videos. I hope you do one for ICORE and 3 Gun as well. I have posted these on all the local gun forums.

  • On last thing. If you live within driving distance of central New Hampshire and would like an up close and personal introduction to SCSA please contact me or the email address listed on Pioneer Sportsmen's Steel page. If we have enough interest I'll see if I can twist enough arms to put together a short intro class before the May, 2011 steel match.

  • To everyone interested in shooting steel please don't hesitate. I've had people ask me what they need to bring to the match and if it's OK to show up just to watch. My stock answer is to bring 1.5-2x the minimum round count (generally 100-125rd min) and whatever gear you are comfortable shooting. There is a class for you and if there isn't we'll make one. :) If you find you need something (holster, belt, tools, etc), I guarantee someone will be more than happy to help you out.

  • @Kopis1911 - At our club (Pioneer Sportsmen) frangible is not required. The shooters are stationed far enough back from the steel so that any fragments coming off the steel won't have enough energy to harm the shooters. That said make sure you bring a hat as lead fragments will fall down through the air. Of course, a set of safety glasses and hearing protection is always necessary.

  • Do you need to use frangible ammunition for these matches?

  • Something I always wanted to try and have never had time... hope to do it someday.

  • I'm new to shooting steel, but I love it so far. Thanks for posting this.

  • I like the wrench paperweight.
