This is the University of Houston's Moores School of Music Concert Chorale singing Barber's "The Coolin" from Reincarnations at the 2008 TMEA Convention. Yes, this is a faster tempo than what most take it. But, the score is marked "Andante" not "REALLY SLOW". So, there ya go. This is probably the best "The Coolin" on YouTube. Dr. Betsy Cook Weber, Director/Legend.

  • This one is probably one of the best that I have heard.

This is good, but this almost sounds like a text book performance. The phrasing with the poem and the sound really shows the colors, I think that they could have been more dramatic with this, without loosing the technique.(Fortissimos even louder and pianissimos softer) and that can allow for a wide dynamic range. BRAVO!

  • @jptram00 Thanks! I completely agree that more dynamic risks could've been taken. Thanks again for ur informed analysis.

  • Wait till you hear TTU do this at TMEA in a couple of weeks. ;)

  • Excellent!!!!

  • Yes VERY difficult, but very well done! I had to sing this my freshman year at UCO and it almost killed me along with adjusting to choir in college and everything else I had to take on. BRAVISSIMO!

  • Very, very well performed! I don't think I've ever heard a better choir. Perfect blend, balance is stellar. And trust me, I'm aware how hard this piece is, as we spent months working on every aspect in my choir. I agree that it's not terribly exciting, though ... the dynamic contrasts could have been more, well, contrasting. Excellent work, though! Excellent! I rather like the fast tempo, even though I've only ever heard it slow - really reminds me of the King's Singers.

  • Seriously great -- this is a very difficult piece (sang it last Spring, and we wrestled with it so much).
