Life's too short to eat bad food, and here in Orange County there are plenty of local favorites to choose from.
Seal Beach is the opposite of those fast-paced, crowded beach cities... kind of like OC's own oceanside Mayberry. And at the center of Main Street stands a seafood icon that has been here over 37 years.
Starting out as a paper-plate fish-and-chips place, Walt's Wharf has evolved into upscale dining serving simple, unpretentious fillets and buckets of steamed shellfish. It's the perfect place for a lunch date or a dinner treat and their high marks from Zagat tell you that they're consistently excellent.
But keep your eye on the season, their menu changes with the calendar and they only serve what's sustainable and available fresh right now. By having their own trucks and buying whole fish, Chef Christopher Krajacic says their freshness can be measured in hours, not days.
"We pick up our own fish, so we get it in fresh, we get it in whole and everything is done with attention to detail here."
And those details aren't covered up with stacks of garnish or leaning towers. At Walt's Wharf the food is the star and it's all made from scratch right on-site.
But don't just come for the fish, "Well yeah, we definitely are known probably for the best artichoke on both sides of the Mississippi. We oak grill it -- that's our oak grill right there..." ... and it's that oak grill that seems to touch everything here and make even humble vegetables that much better.
And the customers know what separates Walt's from the rest...
"Look at the motto. If it's fresher, it's still swimming. Okay? Good food. Perfect food." (William McConnell, long-time Walt's customer)
"Seal Beach is a great town. This is a staple. It's a romantic yet rustic environment. It's not hoity-toity or pretentious or anything like that. We just do what we do. We do it darn well." (Chef Christopher Krajacic)
Walt's Wharf here in Seal Beach isn't the only local favorite, we know you have many more. So send us your favorites through our web site. For OCNewsChannel.com, I'm Troy Witt.
