Remember Mr. Bill from Saturday Night Live? Watch this short to hear him say "Shell NOOOOO" to fish-killing machines in the Gulf of Mexico.

This short played a critical role in helping win a huge victory when Shell announced in March 2007 that it would abandon plans for an off-shore facility in the Gulf of Mexico that would have jeopardized Gulf sealife.

The Shell terminal's design would have needlessly killed billions of fish eggs, larvae, and zooplankton, jeopardizing important fisheries and the economies that rely on them. Shell's terminal alone could have destroyed the equivalent of 5% of Louisiana's annual redfish catch.

Fortunately, fish-friendly, cost-effective alternatives do exist. Oil companies are using these alternatives elsewhere in the country, but not offshore in the Gulf.

Given the beating the Gulf has taken during this recent overactive hurricane season, the last thing the fish and the Gulf ecosystem need is the further degradation of our natural resources! New Orleanians are glad to see the Shell Corporation return to New Orleans, but we need Shell to take this simple step to protect the Gulf.

  • i live in biloxi. and youre right about cutting back on oil, but the thing is the country as a whole isnt gonna do that. i didnt say destroy wetlands, they can go out in the gulf to find more oil. either that or tell those middle eastern oil tycoons to cheapen their oil prices...or else lol!!!

  • Come to Louisiana and see what the 'drill here-drill now' mentality has created. We're losing a football field of wetlands every 45 minutes due primarily to the oil and gas exploration and development we've allowed since 1947. Talk to actual industry reps, and they'll admit that ten years to get ocs oil to market is ambitious - you want to reduce the price you pay at the pump? quit using so much oil. If our country cuts our consumption by modest amounts, the market responds far more quickly.

  • hey buddy i live in ocean springs, and i agree

  • SHELL NOOOOOOO!!!

  • yeah, thats pretty sad :o

  • By the way, supply will never catch up with demand. Americans have become selfish, irresponsible gluttons. We've even managed to make WATER a scarce commodity.

  • This video does not say not to drill...It says to do it responsibly. That's the whole problem, people hear what they want rather than what is actually being said. That is how the oil companies and other big businesses are able to get away with whatever they want..

  • i didnt say what how they were doing things was correct. but unless they can convince every single american to cut back on oil then we have no choice but to drill...hell, id be all for ethanol (is that what the corn gas is called) cars, if you could ever get it into peoples thick heads to actually support it. and until new energy and gas sources can be found and applied, supply still has to catch up with demand like it or not. *no sarcasm intended i promise :( *

  • So, if people refuse to behave in a responsible manner, we should just enable them? Let's just let 'em kill people too, if they wanna...

All Mr. Bill said was to drill responsibly. He did not say don't drill. I think our bigger concern should be the failure of our school system to teach basic comprehension skills.

  • And I supposed you are concerned enough to turn off the air conditioning, take mass transit/walk/ride a bike and drive an energy efficient auto.

Duh.. He did not say don't drill. He said use a closed loop system. If you are unable to comprehend a cartoon, you are not entitled to have an opinion.
