Testing zooms and steadyshot on the Panasonic SDR-H80 camcorder. 70x optical zoom. This was filmed on a speedboat, so the built-in image stabiliser came in handy. Top speed 50 knots (65 mph).

This footage was filmed in London from a Thames Rib Experience boat, with a bunch of people from qype.co.uk.

I used Panasonic's software, and iMovie.

  • Hi JohnColeman97 &anyone looking for technical advice, please head on over to Panasonic's Website for tech specs...

  • Hi, not an HD camcorder, it's Standard Definition Hard Drive - easy to use, zoom was great, good battery life - dealt well with changing light outside and also worked well in indoor lighting. Mark, if you're looking to buy, type camcorder review into google for some good sites - most camcorders at this price point perform pretty well, without knowing what you're going to be using your camcorder for (it's Ok, I don't need to know!) I reckon go for hard drive/SD over disk or tape for home use.

  • the 70x optical zoom sounds impressive, but there is, and will be, fringing due to the small lenses being used.

plus, when using zooms, even with image stabilisation, a tripod should be used.

i'd turn the IS off though when using a tripod, and turn it on when hand holding the camera and not using the zoom to it's extreme range.

  • Mike, thanks for your comment and rating. Yes, a tripod will definitely make the 70x optical zoom more impressive, and yes, the end of most lenses don't look as sexy as the middle!

  • Hello LJ,can you tell me what is the minium light reqiurement (does it have night shot) and how much digital zoom does it have?. Thanks. DAVE.

  • Hi Dave, if you go to Panasonic's Website, click on Camcorders, you should be able to find the tech specs you'll need. For some reason, I can't seem to post the link from this connection - hope that helps...
