The pawpaw is a tropical-type fruit native to North America with a long and almost forgotten history. Thomas Jefferson once prized it, and now scientists are looking at whether the pawpaw can claim some health benefits, along with cachet. NPR's Tiny Desk Kitchen goes on the hunt for this tasty treat.

  • I seen these before, just never ate any because I didn't know what it was. If I didn't know what something was in the wild, I usually considered it poisonous just to be safe.

  • Lots of info on growing and why the pawpaw hasn't been commercially viable at the University of KY PawPaw website. The pawpaw is a very fast growing tree, able to bear fruit in just 18 months. It is also the largest indigenous fruit in North America.

  • picking up paw paws put it in your pocket.

  • wow, off to find it now. think ill try a asian store. they got everything there

  • So from this video I could get was that the pawpaw tastes like 5 different things: a peach, pudding, bannana, creamy mange, straberry. I'm just waiting until someone says it tastes like a cheeseburger then I'm sold.

  • PawPaw's are pretty common in Australia.

  • Perhaps Juan Williams was fired because he refused to hike out into the forest and pick pawpaws for all the lily white NPR execs???
