Very clear presentation, thanks for showing this instrument.

When they do just the one it sounds like a giant drop of water. Also, at the end, it sounds like 70's American detective music. =P

I always wanted one of those WHERE CAN I GET ONE??? (UK resident)

I always wondered what those drums were called! I love those things and the "dok dok dok" sound.
But I have a question to you takinojo...why do traditional Japanese musicians and such go "yoooohhhhh" during their songs?
-
i really wanna join a kabuki school. I already know how to play the shamisen but i love the other instruments too. Kabuki is one of my passions along side Nippon Minyo

Does anyone have a soundfile with the "yoohhh" included? I want to make it my text msg alert because its so AWESOME!

I notice during some Kabuki performances the drummers seem to blow into the drum...or hold it up to there face...what is that about...?

We blow a breath during a performance on KO-TSUZUMI to give humidity to drum's skin. The skin becomes soft.
One more another reason.. We attach spittle to the paper stretched on the skin. The skin becomes heavy.
Those reasons are for maintaining balance to the condition of air. The condition of air changes every moment during a performance.

This is my most favorite sound in the world. When I'm in the shower or in a stairwell, or in some place where there is resonance, I can't help but mimic this instrument's "pon!!!" sound. "Po-po-pon pon PON!!! Ye-ooh!!!! --- PON!" :-P Gonna buy a tsuzumi some day...
