CCHR: ADHD—Labeling normal kids "mentally ill"

ADHD is a bogus mental "disorder" based only on a checklist of behaviors. There are no medical tests to prove any child has ADHD, yet more than 4.5 million kids have been diagnosed and put on drugs such as Ritalin, Adderall and Concerta, which the U.S. DEA places in the same highly addictive category of drugs as cocaine, morphine and opium. According to the Center for Disease Control, boys are much more likely to be diagnosed "ADHD" than girls. The "checklist" for ADHD could fit any normal child and literally includes such ridiculous criteria as " runs about or climbs excessively in situations when it is not appropriate" (we are talking about KIDS here... right?) " is often 'on the go "acts as if driven by a motor" "blurts out answers" "is easily distracted" " loses pencils or toys" "often doesn't seem to listen"

To be perfectly clear — this is ALL that it takes to diagnoses a child with a 'mental disorder' of ADHD; a checklist of behaviors (the above is taken directly from the American Psychiatric Association's Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM), psychiatry's billing bible. There is no medical or scientific test that is then taken afterwards to 'confirm' this diagnoses -- simply because there isn't one. So the ONLY way a kid is ever diagnosed is simply based on the checklist. That's it. There are no blood tests, brain scans, chemical imbalance tests, X-rays or "genetic" factors to prove any child has a mental "illness" called ADHD. This is simply a list of child-like behaviors that psychiatrists clustered together, repackaged as a mental disorder and the result is a multi- billion dollar empire — the child labeling and drugging industry

You make no difference between kids having ADHD and taking drugs for ADHD. There are many non drug approaches to addressing kids that are having problems with their executive functions. Even if ADHD is simply the extreme end of the natural variability in humans it doesn't mean something shouldn't be done about it and if non drug approaches don't work and the kid is hated by their peers, can't concentrate to learn anything or complete tasks then drugs can help them get back on track.

@itsStruth A psychiatric diagnoses stigmatizes a person for life. A diagnosis of "ADHD" means that kid/person is mentally ill and that diagnoses becomes part of their permanent medical record. It is a PSYCHIATRIC diagnoses. Not a medical diagnoses. So 20 years from now, the kid will still carry a label of "mental illness" in their permanent medical record. @CCHRInt Science has proven time and time again, adhd is a true disorder, caused by chemical imbalances in the brain. not just by a checklist as you claim.You obviously don't have ADHD. I do, before i learnt to deal with it and used them to my advantage, I never got anything no matter how hard i tried, always forgot my books, always distracted, never... shit i forgot. see? Imagine just going like that in every essay, always stopping always forgetting every second of every day.

As a 41 yr old artist/performer and adult ADHD sufferer I must say that it 's scary how REAL It is. Yeh boys will be boys, crazy, wild, loud, rambunctious. But try being this way as an adult, not being able to hold a job, provide for yourself or family, constantly f-king up your life, because you make bad decisions or worse. I didn't know I had it til I was 35, just thought I was a major F-up. and you wouldn't believe the pain, stress, and depression I've had in my life or inflicted on others.

@CCHRInt You know what, before I was "labeled" with ADD I was labeled a slacker, lazy, selfish, cold, a jerk. Ever since those labels changed into the one ADD label, I am now considered a brave, hardworking, caring and intelligent person. People are A LOT nicer to me than when they just thought I was a loser. 20 years from now my kids will be in school and I will be well respected as a long time employee in a great career and I never could have had any of it without being labeled as ADD
