Margaret Singana born Margaret Mcingana, 1938, Queenstown in the Eastern Cape, died 2000 was a South African musician.

In the 1950s Singana moved to Johannesburg and soon started performing with The Symbols. In 1972 she made "Good Feelings" with the band. She became the first black artist to feature on the Radio 5 hit parade. Singana's song "I never loved a man the way I loved you" became a hit. In 1973, Singana was cast as the lead singer in the musical Ipi Tombi and soon made herself famous with the song "Mama Tembu's Wedding". She suffered from bad health for many years but in 1986 she returned to sing "We Are Growing", the theme song from the television series Shaka Zulu.

Singana has received many awards, including the 1976/1977 critics award from the British magazine Music Week. She was known as "Lady Africa" in Southern Africa.

SONG LYRICS:

Tonight's tonight's the wedding feast
The men arrive with the slaughtered beast
A wail, a chant soon fills the air
For miles around the people hear

Mama Tembu's getting married here tonight
All the spirits looking, shouting their delight
Mama Tembu's getting married here tonight
The bones are thrown and love is happy, shining bright

Ela chle ghala chle thalakalela paja
Ela chle ghala chle thalakalela paja
Ela chle ghala chle thalakalela paja
Ela chle ghala chle thalakalela paja

The neighbours kneel and kiss the bride
The warrior waits, he's filled with pride
The drummer starts to pound the drum
For miles around they hear the sound

Mama Tembu's getting married here tonight
All the spirits looking, shouting their delight
Mama Tembu's getting married here tonight
The bones are thrown and love is happy, shining bright

Ela chle ghala chle thalakalela paja
Ela chle ghala chle thalakalela paja
Ela chle ghala chle thalakalela paja
Ela chle ghala chle thalakalela paja

And I sighed and I called in the deep of the night
Because never before have I seen such a sight
As the bride Mama Tembu walks out through the door
And the valleys still echoes the sound of the roar

Mama Tembu's getting married here tonight
All the spirits looking, shouting their delight
Mama Tembu's getting married here tonight
The bones are thrown and love is happy, shining bright

Ela chle ghala chle thalakalela paja
Ela chle ghala chle thalakalela paja
Ela chle ghala chle thalakalela paja
Ela chle ghala chle thalakalela paja
Ela chle ghala chle thalakalela paja
Ela chle ghala chle thalakalela paja
Ela chle ghala chle thalakalela paja
Ela chle ghala chle thalakalela paja

  • Excellent music . Nothing like it worldwide . I grew up in Durban but moved to England in 2005 . I am really missing the good African beat and the boeremusiek . I have added these onto my Favourites ad I am listening to them almost daily . I want to get the CD so I can play it in my car while driving through West Yorkshire .

    I am feeling homesick .

  • Must surely be the most famous South African song of all time! Thank you, Margaret

  • Although my home is now Ireland I was taking a trip down memory lane and it is making me really homesick for SA. Luckily I'm going home for a visit in September for my granddaughter's wedding so this song is really appropriate....... love you South Africa. This is a really beautiful video....thanks for the memories.
