Mormons were and still are very progressive on issues regarding women and race. Mormons were closely aligned with womens activists like Susan B. Anthony. Mormons did not engage with Martin Luther King on a large scale (save the Romney family) because Mormons did not live in the south, and some feared his big government views (government has been hostile to the church in years past).
