Dec. 8, 2009: The Oregon Humane Society, answering a call to help animals in distress, is dispatching a rescue team today on a six-hour trip to eastern Oregon to save as many as 100 dogs.

Most of the dogs are living without shelter on a rural property in Princeton, Oregon, about 20 miles outside of Burns. Some of the dogs are living underground in holes covered with planks, others are chained to farm equipment and have little or no shelter from the snow, wind and sub-freezing temperatures common in the high-desert country.

The rescue team is expected to return to the OHS shelter in Portland on Wednesday, Dec. 9 at approximately 4 pm. A three-person OHS team traveled to the property Monday and returned with 14 dogs, including four puppies who are one-week old and six puppies who are three- to four-months old.

  • I adopted one of the dogs from this case. She has been a lot of work to socialize and has a lot of work left to do, but is loving and wants nothing more than to be a part of our family.

  • I hope you were able to find good homes for all of these dogs, thank you for the work that you do.

  • Please help if you can, by sending people to the Harney County Save a Stray website to help the pups still being born and in need of homes.

After March 15th, they will be shot.

    Thanks so much!!

PS Our pup from there is named Keebler.

  • We just adopted a puppy from this place.

He is a complete doll, and we adore him.

Melanie Epping from Harney County Save a Stray is still going over there and gathering pups.

So google her website and give her a call if you are interested.

  • wow. Thats horrible. I cannot beleive the way some people treat animals. the end broke my heart with those buckets and all the bones everywhere. How could they let them go.. those people need to be tied to a car and left in the snow!

  • I adopted one of these dogs last thursday, she's the coolest, chillest, best behaved dog I've ever had, despite the circumstances she came from! Seriously, go down to OHS and check these dogs out, they're seriously sweet, kind dogs and if mine's any indication, great companions.

  • Some of the horses in the background don't look that well off either. Lots of nice looking dogs too . Hope they all make it into good homes. All kids and dogs deserve better than a place like that. Hope the kids are OK.

  • shocking... how do we find out who the people are who got arrested? that sure would be interesting.. give them a little public humiliation!

  • Thank you OHS for being such a wonderful organization striving to find new homes for such poorly treated animals. This video shows such promising behavior from the poor pups. Im glad to see they are liking the human contact. Too often dogs left neglected and alone fear humans so much that they cant be rehabilitated, but it looks to me like most if not all of these dogs will be adoptable! What broke my heart is that an 11 year old girl called and reported it... that was truly touching!

  • People who treat their animals like this should not even be able to keep one dog!! They should NEVER be allowed to have animals again. Thank you OHS for helping these poor dogs. I couldn't imagine what kind of life it would be to sit in the cold with no food. I'm going to donate soem things next week to the shelter to help out. I always donate when I can and I also volunteer for a local rescue. I adopted a dog from OHS that is the most loving deaf Jack Russell I have ever seen. Thanks Again!!
