Mississippi John Hurt is one of my all-time favorite folk singers. He played a very simple, yet beautiful style that has had a big influence on my own playing. This song "Spike Driver Blues" is considered a classic amongst folk artists and fans of country blues (you can catch MJH playing this live with folk legend Pete Seeger - here on youtube - definitely check it out!). Like many MJH songs it tells a story - here of John Henry, a rail worker, who ended up on the wrong end of a hammer fight...
I will be posting more MJH in the future... please subscribe to my channel to hear lots more fingerstyle, folk and country blues. I wish you all a wonderful day!
Nice job. You need to be a little bit rougher on the strings to get that "Hurt" feeling. Loosen up a bit. You've got the basics, stay with it. I found if I eat a lot of grits i can't play this song any better, but I think I can. The rhythm is the key. Great sounding guitar.
