Electro-Harmonix Effectology, Vol.11 Crystal-Shimmer Effects
By Bill Ruppert
Welcome to Electro-Harmonix's "Effectology" series, in which we create a remarkable
collection of impossible sounds using just a regular guitar and EHX effect pedals!
No keyboards, samplers or midi pickups were used.

In this episode Bill Ruppert demonstrates how to produce beautiful Crystal-Shimmer effects
as well as a new sound called "Symphonic".
To create the first two clips seen in the video I wired the effect pedals in parallel.
Placing the effects in a parallel chain opens up new and beautiful sounds not possible when using a standard series connection.
The third example "Symphonic" places the effects back in a series connection.
A volume pedal is used to swell the chords in and remove the attack of the guitar giving the guitar a string section type sound.
Its a beautiful sound from just one guitar!
The clip is a improvisation on the song "Adagio for Strings"by Samuel Barber.
This music has been used in many great movies you may have seen.

  • @Effectology I'm going to ask about something kind of experimental. I have a Behringer V amp head(digi amp with multi fx) that I have laying around while I use my tube combo(as the main sound). I have a bass amp i was thinking of using with the head plugged in. I was thinking of using a stereo pedal linking the two amp configurations. Any advice or is this a bad idea?

  • @AphoticAgony With two separate amps like that it could sound HUGE!

Effects on one side keeps the one of the bass signals in the clear and more defined.

    Try it!

  • Can I use digitech whammy instead of POG?

  • Great !!!!!!!

A phase problem will show up as the effect vanishes or the sound becomes hollow.

You can imagine one signal in phase and its mixed with an identical one 180 degrees out of phase. They cancel each other out and your effect vanishes.

No way to tell till you put things in line. It happens more when you mix different manufactures gear together.

  • @Effectology yup, I've noticed this already, either that or it's coming from the crappy pickup....that and the audible clicks of turning on/off any pedal get accentuated or lessened depending on the placement within the chain...

  • @bluesintheblood

    Have fun!

Sometimes different manufactures have a different output phase and that causes a strange sound.

You never know till you get them in line and see.

  • @Apathesis0

    You should be fine.

Some times the output phase of different pedals are different and will not create the proper effect.

That is impossible to know until you try it.

Nothing here should break your pedals.

  • For each sound I expected the same effects laid out differently.

I see why you did it that way, but it's just interesting how many ways to get similar (if not the same) sounds when dealing with modular units.

The routing of my rack and pedal gear to get some odd sound for a recording was often incredibly cumbersome and impossible to remember, so "similar" became my goal ;)

  • @Effectology But what, if any effects will it have, and could it break my pedal? I'm going to buy some adapters but I'd like to know before I try. I don't understand a whole lot about electronics.
