Please note that exercise balls are extremely stressful and unhealthy for degus. A wooden exercise wheel in their cage is enough. If you want to let them run around a room, make sure the room is degu safe and then just let them out. They don't make a big mess.

Thank you for your comment. We generally put them in the balls when we are cleaning their cage so cannot watch them as closely as we like.
They seem very keen to play in their balls- the girls fight as to who gets first dibs. The male can be reluctant sometimes, but when he's allowed free roam in our bathroom, we put the ball in and he often climbs in there for security.
