Aurora and Esmeralda were lovers, until Frollo murdered the gypsy. Esmeralda's loss was too painful for Aurora to accept- she's haunted by her memories. And so, Aurora comes to believe that Esmeralda never died... that she is still very much alive. Obsessed with the thought, she exhumes her lover's body and the two have their own reunion.
Aurora leaves happily, finally with her love again, but Frollo has his eyes on the girl. He'd been watching her since Esmeralda's death- careful that she didn't reveal his guilt in the murder. And then, when he saw her leave the cemetery, he'd gotten the evidence he'd needed. He accused her of desecration of a body, and had her burned at the stake for necrophilia and witchcraft. Of course, Frollo didn't know what went on in the tomb... or how true his accusations were. For indeed, it was not the gypsy girl Esmeralda who was the witch- it was Aurora.
And Aurora happily accepts her death, for she knows that real love never dies.

@ACompanyofSwans Thank you! Aurora, who was a witch, performed rituals of necromancy on Esmeralda in hopes of bringing her back from the dead. While she was unsuccessful, her death at Frollo's hands managed to rouse Esmeralda's 'sleeping' spirit and awaken her.
