Here's part of my latest technical program, performed at the 2008 Masters Cup in June. The first part of this performance had terrible jumps and a shocker of a sit spin, so I thought I'd just show the better parts. I'm really pleased with the camel spin progress, but need to work on holding the back spiral position longer.
Music is Bryan Adams' "Have you ever really loved a woman?".

  • Hi! I finally got a chance to check out your page after you commented on my video. Yes, your spirals are really nice, and camel too. You have really turned out hips. That's my #1 problem I think! My spirals stink because my knee and toe are down... so I've got a lot to practice. Well good routine!

  • Thanks so much for the kind words!

Spirals depend on having good turn out, but a good exercise is to practice them in front of a mirror, and hold for at least 20 seconds. I find spirals require more back strength than anything, as the skates weigh so much!

Just wish jumps and spins came as easily to me...my jumps are about 1 inch off the ice and spins are rarely centred, but half the fun is setting goals for ourselves, no matter what level we are.

    :)

Best of luck with your skating!

  • Just WOW!

Your skating is so graceful and beatiful :))

  • Thanks so much, Infuce!

Ballet training really helps ALL skaters, as so many ice skating moves are borrowed from ballet. (Spirals are just arabesques, spread eagles are 2nd position and ina bauers are a little like 4th position).

As an added bonus, ballet training will give you great posture for life!

(ps. Not that you need my advice on ballet, as your posture and skating style are excellent! Happy skating.)

  • Super costume!! Stylish.....you certainly

    "bow" well too!! Best wishes

  • Thanks k9henrydog.

I find creating costumes as enjoyable as the skating...this one was a bought top, to which I added the red sleeve inserts and decorated with loads of red crystals. The pants I made, and I had a spare red leotard lying around. Half the fun is improvising with what you have... :)

  • Just lovely!!!!

  • nice spirals!

  • I love the position in your forward spiral, very elegant looking. Plus you ended just perfect with the music. Bravo!

  • It is quite stunning!!! and yes, I agree about the many other artistic areas of skating. You could spent a lifetime in costume design!!! You should think about making costumes for others. You could really help others presentations!! so eye-catching!! best wishes as always

  • mmm i shall look now. oh thank you! i love spinning! its SO much fun!

  • I find legs look longer if the neckline is lower (look at my 2007 Masters Video) and if you wear over-the-boot tights to continue the line, not have it "chopped" off by the boots. ps. I had a look at your vids. Your spin position is AMAZING!!

  • continued.

Well it took me about a year to be able to get right down and right up. But now its just really easy for me. My coach is now making me go right down in my back sit, and because i dont have the same amount of strength on my right leg its hard to get up. HAHA. WOW.. thats actually funny!

    Thanx for the reply.

  • Your welcome. My name is Bebe. yeah. ive never had that problem. Check out my sit spin and my bullet spins, they might be able to help you. oh HAHA! well one of my bestfriends looks like shes got quite long legs but when she does her camels they look really tiny. haha.

  • Thanks for the compliments and advice, bebeskater! Yeah. I have huge trouble keeping my leg behind in the camel entrance. I'm trying to work on getting my torso lower in the spin position. Strange you think my legs are short though...others have commented that my legs are really long, and I always have difficulty getting low on a sit spin, as it's such a long way down! (Someone once asked Abe Lincoln how long should a man's legs be. His reply? "Long enough to touch the ground.") :)

  • your first spiral is very well held! haha you have really short legs. you can tell this in your camel.

Just a tip. make sure your right leg is behind you and not out the side while doing the turn before the actual entrance of your spin. But over all its a nice artistic routine!

    x

  • Thanks Sophie!

I deliberately edited out the first part of this program, as I completely bombed out on the sit spin and did the world's tiniest jumps. I'll be performing this again in a few weeks, so I hope to do better in the jumps.

ps. I had a look at your videos. WOW...you're doing really well! Keep it up!

  • That was a very nice peformance! I like your forward spiral =]

  • Hi Schaats,

Thanks for the kind words. I know what you mean about the camel entrance. I've had this problem with spin entrances for years. The inside edge is done on my left foot, which is really weak, and tends to grind to a stop. I'm working on outside spin entrances, which seems to help with keeping up a bit of speed.

Skating sure tones up hips and butts, but no matter how toned you get, falls still hurt, lol!

  • Hi "Gorgeous",

I had no idea you were signed up to YouTube! I'm looking forward to seeing any videos you may post!

Yeah. I never liked sport at school. Probably 'cause we never did anything wonderful like skating! Better late than never I guess.....

  • Its hard to believe you used to be the non sporty one of us - now look at you! None of the girlfriends really do much thats active anymore and you are going great guns. Gorgeous as always!!! Love Karen

  • BEAUTIFUL! You've got a slightly strange way of going into the camel but the position looks great!

And for your age, you've a great butt (like all figure skaters), by the way. It's way better to be obsessed about skating than it is to be obsessed about dieting or something. :)

  • Thanks Emily!

Ballet training is invaluable for posture development. My ballet teacher was tough and strict, but she taught us something you never forget, even 30 years later!

  • Beautiful job! You always have such nice posture, all the way through to the two little bows at the end.
