I was sitting at home experimenting with chords and intonation, when I came across with this very clear overtone. I uploaded the sample for demonstration to you who have never heard or understood what an overtone is or sounds like.

The bass is on tonic (A)
The bari is on the 5th (E)
The lead is on the 9th (B)
The tenor is on the 10th (C#)

The 12th you hear (the high E) that you might consider as the most dominant tone in this chord is a pure overtone.

I added the video afterwards, for no reason at all.

  • the waves in there make it hard to hear that E up there, but it is heard, and you sir, have a great voice.

  • gay

  • yes you can hear it i´ll post a vdeo response to demonstrate with wich voicers it functions on a keyboard it is interresting.

  • I can very very VERY barely hear the overtone. Most of the time though, when people are talking about them, I can't =( I had to replay this about a dozen times to barely be able to catch it lol. I wish there was a way to bring em out more =P

  • I easily hear that overtone. My brother is an international barbershop quartet champion so I have been clued in to listening for overtones. It's pretty amazing. My brother's quartet is called Take Note.

  • Cool! But can you do it with your voice as well?

  • 9ths always give that "shimmer" which is just another overtone

  • AMAZING! I hear it! Music is such an awesome thing, and the ability to sing a gift from God :)

  • the 'E' that you hear (and I hear) is a 'beat' note. Because your tuning is very pure and accurate. Not an overtone but 'beating' - more of an undertone really.

  • Oh, yes, absolutely, turn off ALL digital signal processing that your sound card or O.S. may be doing. Reverb, environment, equalizer, bass boost, whatever. Those will interfere with hearing overtones.
