Jonathan "DJK" Kim reviews the documentary 'Boogie Man: the Lee Atwater Story'. 'Boogie Man' follows the life of Lee Atwater, the man who rocketed to the top of the republican party and created their playbook of cultural division, racism, and dirty tricks to secure victories for Ronald Reagan, George HW Bush, and George W Bush. Karl Rove and Tucker Eskew (currently working for the McCain campaign) were two of his protégés. But Atwater was more than a hatchet man, who was filled with contradictions and died of brain cancer when he was 41.

Atwater may have repented on his death bed and asked forgiveness, but his proteges did not. ...While his sincerity might be questionable, Atwater did indeed apologize for almost everything he ever did in the Feb 1991 issue of Life magazine. Here's one of the many first person quotes: "While I didn't invent negative politics, I am one of its most ardent practitioners." You can find more with a simple search. Of course, based on your OP, I'm guessing fact checking isn't your specialty.
