7. Range of motion: Part 1

Dr. Mark Hutchinson's Knee, Shoulder and Hip/Groin Exam is a combined project of the University of British Columbia (UBC), the University of Illinois, Chicago (UIC), the Norwegian University of Sport Sciences, Oslo. The project is a teaching initiative of the Centre for Hip Health and Mobility (CHHM) (Vancouver).

The faculty leads are Drs Mark Hutchinson, Teresa Liu-Ambrose, Karim Khan and Roald Bahr. Additional faculty support has come from Drs Michael Koehle, Ian Scott, Navin Prasad as well as Tyler Dumont.




Project coordinators: Tonia Timperley and Julian Cooper (UBC School of Human Kinetics, Faculty of Education)



Funding: UBC Teaching and Learning Enhancement Fund (TLEF) through the Faculty of Education and the Faculty of Medicine.

  • I agree with mentalet, this isn't the right way for testing muscle strength. Thumbs down for this video...

  • This isn't right:

    Quadriceps test: you ask for full extension in the knee while she has a active forward flexion in her hip. So when you push down, your force is being redirected to the hip where only the bi-articulair part of the Quads (m. rectus femoris) is active as is the other hipflexor (m. illiopsoas).

    Your testing the gastrocnemius with a bended knee? the gastroc is the bi-articulair so by bending the knee you made it less active. Your testing the soleus and again in a weird way

  • Get the patient to do AROM first then do passive then resist. As always test the good side first.
