They sacrificed children and tons of people to their Gods, and constantly fought each other. God did not like this unrest. AND, when it comes to David, the Philistines had raided and harassed the Israeli land for as long as they had been there. David defeated them, to save the Israeli population and build a kingdom.

When Moses led them out of Egypt, he led "Israel" out. Joshua settled in Judea/Kanaa/Palestine (whatever you like). When Saul assebmled the tribes it was therefore called "Israel" when it was split after Salomon, there was Samaria (north) and Juda (south), but together they were called "Israel".
