"Under a Texas Moon" was a Warner Bros. production of 1930, famous of its pearl lights and scarler reds and emerald greens, all those Technicolor colours (it was the second "western movie" in colours), but also becouse of absolutely beguiling Myrna Loy & Frank Fay's performances as well as Ray Perkins' title song, which is, no doubt, one of the finest "western tunes" ever.

In this unique recording, it can be heard with one of the most popular crooners of the "era before Crosby" and a very fine pianist - Seger Ellis, accompanied but his friend Eddie Lang, "the genius of a guitar".

  • Lang died as a result of a botched Tonsillectony (much like Benny Moten) Lang had a difficulty clotting. poss Hemophilia, they didn't check his clotting before surgery. When a Doctor makes a mistake, when they can't correct, they bury it. Love Ellis' voice. He could have donet he Piano part as well if not better. Seger Ellis was also a fine Pianist as well, He was originally from Texas, so this song is a good fit for him.

  • Ray Perkins was a snappy popular pianist who recorded some solo piano sides (which I haven't heard yet) and some Ampico piano rolls (which I have; they're FANTASTIC!). I'll try to dig up more on him when I have time.

I am surprised by Seger's piano playing here. He was known as being one of the most gutbucket, lowdown blues players, and this is fairly far removed from that!

  • Eddy Lang's tasteful work.

    Always a joy.

(Damned fluke surgery that took him from greater heights at only 30!)

  • I am playing this over and over. Great version of this song. Thanks for posting!

  • Great song and tenor. Luckily there was no annoying brass instrument (by Dorsey or other) to ruin this song. The addition of violins would have made it even better.

  • jajaja eres un culazo!!

  • Art Song is an interchangeable term for Lied. One web definition: "A song focusing on artistic rather than popular expression". I listened to this song, then listened to the Hylton-O'Malley's version, and when I listened to this one again, though it is obviously not an art song by definition, I said to myself: "compared to the Hylton popular-style, danceable version, this has qualities reminding of an art song" I did qualify it with "almost" though :)

  • Splendid. This version is so pure and uncomplicated it sounds almost like an art song.

  • I bought the sheet music to this song over 30 years ago in a thrift shop. I'd never heard of the movie, and until now I've never heard the song. Thanks for posting this--and for providing information about the movie.

  • LOVELY!I have a dance band version of this i may upload at some point.
