Swedish aerobatics champion Gabor Varga, 45, lost his life when his stunt plane was involved in a collision with another aircraft off Grand Harbour during a race. The two single seat aircraft were among participants in the AeroGP of Malta. Varga's red and blue aircraft was seen to crash into the sea after it lost its tail in the collision. The other pilot parachuted safely. A spokesman for the organisers' PR company confirmed the identity of the dead pilot. Varga was listed in the Guinness Book of Records for performing the highest number of aerobatic loops in an hour - 256.

  • @Dontsmokereally Legal grounds my arse, the pilots were not happy to fly head to head, that is fact. This is the very reason that the Redbull air races dont do head to head its crazy.

  • @maxpower1870

This statement is untrue, and possibly grounds for legal action. I interviewed all the pilots before and after this incident. No one participated in any aspect of this event against their will. They flew for days, hopping across Europe to be there, and they knew the risks involved.

Gabor Varga's death was a tragedy. Casting blame will do nothing to bring him back.

  • that guy was probably like: "surprise butt sex"

    "oh crap, bad timing"

  • What purpose does this kind of flying serve? Big waste of resources and a real dumb way to die.

  • the guy in the red plane must feel devastated.

  • Fake my ass, if it was fake, why would it be on the Maltese News???

Everyone was shocked that day, especially people who saw it before their own eyes

  • Nither pilot was to blame for this crash. Eddie Gogins was just very lucky to escape. The blame for this crash should be on the organisers. None of the pilots wanted to do this crazy head to head racing. It is very sad

  • Thats a very stupid look on things dick head. These are some of the most skilled pilots in the world. Do you seriously think that if Gogins knew Gabor was moving up on him in the chase he would have stayed there?? His life was in danger too. What if he lost a wing? He would be gone too.

It is a shame to see people die like that.

However the pilots all know, too well, how dangerous it is.

This is the game you play. If you don't like it, don't play it. Simple isn't it

  • dame thats wat you call a hit and run

  • I was there...it was very bad!
