  • Profound!! ...so long old pal...(or not..) so they turn around ..expectations to the unknown.. .old trobadour!! words cannot describe you or the ..things you say!!

  • @Margarita171066

your story moved me to tears , as does this song. Am so glad it has helped you along in life, as it has done me.

Hope all is well with you and that your life is what you want it to be now.

    I wish you well

  • Thanks so very much for posting this song like this. I love JT and Barbara Hershey, but their "offical video" killed the song and its rich imagery. The song speaks for itself so beautifully and we all need to hear it in our own way. You've done us all a great service..

  • I love this beautiful song since the first time I listened to in 1997. But it has been cathartic as well for me after all the things I have lived during these years: moving -alone, no friends, no family- to Madrid from my country, Venezuela. Then my mother's death and finally two miscarriages -I have no children. Thanks, James. Thanks to remind me we carry home at our hearts...

  • Loved him since his first Apple Recording, 1967! Still have the original, fold-out album, all 6+ feet of beautiful young baby James...

  • @longhairedbeatnik :( aaw. life. :(

  • velvet voice

  • As allways.... the best... and lovely folk singer ever!!!

  • What a terribly sad song. This song is in fact about JT's older brother Alex, who died as a result of alcoholism in 1993. JT used the characture of a woman named Alice as a metaphor for his brother. The western location of this song is irrelevant as Alex's funeral was held in Florida. The first 4 lines of the third verse are a reference to Alex's death which occured on JT's birthday. He was subsequently cremated right before a hurricane struck the east coast.

  • beautiful :-)
