Ghosts of the Forest

So beautiful, almost magical are the deer. Along with doing scientific research about deer working to save the 400+ to be killed in Shawnee Mission Park, Kansas, I've read the most beautiful stories of folklore about the deer. Some American Indian cultures "revered and cherished" deer as is reflected in the story here.

I used to ride my horse in the woods on the north side of Lake Geneva, Wisconsin and came face to face with a white doe once. I think I was about 20 feet from her. Stopped my horse and stood quietly, watching her until she moved on. She hadn't heard me approaching because the leaves and ground were wet, and my horse's footfalls were very quiet. She did see me, and stared at me for some time, but she wasn't alarmed. I saw her a few times after that at a distance. It was a magical experience. :)
