Russell Mills and Undark, "Golden Hair," from the 1999 album "Pearl & Umbra." The text is a 1904 poem by James Joyce, Part V in his "Chamber Music."

Lean out of the window, Golden-hair,
I hear you singing A merry air.
My book was closed; I read no more,
Watching the fire dance On the floor.
I have left my book, I have left my room
For I heard you singing Through the gloom,
Singing and singing A merry air,
Lean out of the window, Golden-hair.

  • THanks very much! We have done other projects with Paul Farley (whitbread prize winner) "republic of thorns" and vocal treatment is key with in that... I don't know if the dcd version is actually from the same piece by Sid, Clodagh Simonds has released a few ablums under "foevur hex" name.We still have many works with her that never got finished including Percy Jones bass! Best ,MIke

  • @miketheaxe I'll look up the pieces you've mentioned. Cutting edge, push the envelope, etcetera etcetera. Keep the faith, too. Plus...you do good work!

  • Hi, I'm Mike. I engineered and contributed a lot to this album. All credits are on the original album cover, but in relation to this post, I can tell you this. Clodagh Simonds was the vocalist and played the harmonium, Michael Brook/ me, did guitars, Russ and Tom Smyth constructed the track in it's form now. I don't know the ddc version, but "our" golden hair was based on the original Sid Barret (floyd) version.

  • @miketheaxe Wow. Thank you for posting this comment! It is a masterfully engineered piece...I am a poet, so love the treatment of the text. I can't locate a Dead Can Dance sample, and I have every DCD album. This is a brilliant work, though. Congrats, and my admiration!

  • I'm shim626 but I had to change my account for some complicated reason I'm not getting into. so maybe Russell Mills sampled Lisa Gerrard for this? I could have sworn this was a DCD song.

  • @TheShim79 I love DCD, too, but I can't identify any samples from them here.

  • @shim626 Nope. Honest.

  • This isn't Russell Mills/Undark, it's Dead Can Dance!

  • Nice.
