The Lark Ascending is a work by the English composer Ralph Vaughan Williams, inspired by George Meredith's 122-line poem of the same name about the skylark. The work was written in two versions: violin and piano, written in 1914; and violin and orchestra, written in 1920. It is one of the most popular pieces in the Classical repertoire among British listeners. George Meredith, was an English novelist and poet during the Victorian era. Before his death, Meredith was honoured from many quarters: he succeeded Lord Tennyson as president of the Society of Authors; in 1905 he was appointed to the Order of Merit by King Edward VII

Ralph Vaughan Williams (Vaughan Williams) was an English composer of symphonies, chamber music, opera, choral music, and film scores. He was also a collector of English folk music and song which influenced his editorial approach to the English Hymnal, beginning in 1904, containing many folk song arrangements set as hymn tunes, in addition to several original compositions.

  • Forgot to mention: Mine is a music history channel of 700 playlists & 112 of them cover every year since 1900. I added this to my 1920 playlist thanks to your giving the year for this orchestral composition. I'm certain that this music must be the basis for several dozen major dramatic film scores. It is a masterwork !!! chuck

  • Stunning - this must now be one of the best videos on youtube! My compliments !!! l grew up in central Florida & watched the first space shuttle take off at Cape Canaveral in 1981. On clear days, even though we lived 70mi/110km away, we could seethe rockets' flames as they took off - amazing. Sending this to my 900 friends right now! chuck in Phoenix
