My late father was one of the garrison of Tobruk who were taken prisoner in 1942,hIs regiment the 2nd batt Cameron Highlanders (scottish) were the last to surrender and as they marched three abreast into the pow compound ,general Rommel (as he was then) stood in his staff car and saluted the scots soldiers,my father never said a bad word about him.

Field Marshal Rommel was a true warrior till death and respected by allied generals. He was never a party loyalist but a soldier.

@xATrueFanx Rommel was wounded when his staff car was strafed it is not known who the pilot was as there are at least 3 claimants, it is possible that a unwounded Rommel might have responded differently to developments and results might have differed, we will never know.
