A performance by the MusicaNova Orchestra conducted by Warren Cohen of the Symphony no.4 "Sinfonia lirico" by Eduard Tubin at Tempe Center for the Arts on January 4 2009 at the Tempe Center for the Arts.
Tubin was the most important Estonian composer of the 20th century; his music was little known outside of Estonia and Sweden until the advocacy of Neeme Järvi and the recordings of his works on BIS brought attention to his music. The 4th is probably his most accessible Symphony.
MusicaNova Orchestra has as its mission the performance of unjustly neglected music. Find out more at MusicaNovaaz.org.
I have known this piece for a long time now and it IS one of the unknown really good pieces of it's time. I love the second theme around 2.00 to 3.16 - Great oboe solo and those strings upper and lower send shivers up my spine every time I hear this. It's a lovely warm glow that Tubin creates for the strings in this movement. It must be fun to play this music.

I believe this piece is a largely unknown masterpiece. It can stand next to anything by Sibelius, Nielsen, Elgar or Vaughn Williams (Symphonists of roughly the same time).
This performance has some lovely tone, particularly in the winds. It is a little ragged in spots, but certainly gets across the lyric sweep of the work.
I hope Tubin gets more performed more, particularly in North America. The third, fourth and fifth symphonies deserve to be a part of the repertory.

A very inspired composition. I consider it Tubin's best inspiration.
