my jack russell is an excellent pheasant dog and loves hunting out here in iowa. jack russells were bred to be fox hunting dogs , they would chase the fox out of there hole. i didnt have to train my dog, he learned on his own when i took him out for walks on dirt roads. now its our favorite pastime together.

  • sorry gimpingman i accidently hit remove when i meant to hit reply, anyways you wrote," Have you ever noticed hearing loss for a day or so after you took him hunting? I used to take my Mini Pin out, hes a good flusher but I noticed it seemed that he would go deaf for a day or so after hunting."

answer, no he never had hearing loss and i think he has built in radar in his head, nothing gets by him.

  • im thinking about getting on of these little guys, i want to use it for small game hunting, can i train the dog to both point, and chase small game like rabbits and squirrels, and especially pheasants, without it killing them?

  • well my dog just chases the pheasant out and forces them to fly so i can shoot them in the air as for rabbits and squirells most of the time they get away, there pretty fast, but he has got a few and i cant stop him from killing them, its in a dogs nature to hunt and kill

  • Hell yeah Im from Iowa too! (Bettendorf) Love your Jack, they're the best dogs in the world.

  • yup hunting seasons only a month away, he cant wait ! he loves it. hope corn harvest isnt too late this year. the pheasant seem to hide too well in there and makes it hard to spot them. i hunt the ditches on the dirt roads and if the corn is still up. they stay in the corn fields. which makes for tough hunting

  • hunting doesnt catch much, dont you mean scaring them lol

  • i didnt have my gun when i was filming and most of the birds he spooked up were hens anyways, cant shoot hens, only roosters. weve gotten many a pheasant together though.

  • I've never seen a JRT work game birds before, but hey....if it works why not.

  • It's fun to see how a jack stalks his prey and succeeds grabbing ther rabbit.

My jack kills and rips the whole thing open, very nasty to see, and hard to explain to others.

But like you said, it;s in there nature.

I love how they are not afraid of anything.

My jack doesnt back down for any sized dog, which is funny, but sometimes I do get a little worried, if the other dog is kinda big and grumpy.

  • I love Jack Russells. My terrier stalks and even kills many vermin, pigeons and chickens. I tried everything I could to stop this in her but its her nature and she is very good at it!

  • please oh. do more of this grand dog, didnt know their abilities. I was looking for ideas to paint and sropped hereglad I did.
