http://hhskate.com San Francisco took it to the streets in a way that only Alcatraz locals could comprehend. The Hometown Heroes contest went down on true street ledges and gaps at SF's primo skate spot, 3rd and Army. Featuring curved ledges, big gaps, and tall bars to do tricks over, this spot is a true street skaters paradise. But as we all know, the weather will have a heavy hand in deciding how the results of the day will play out. Anything along the shore-front is subject to the natural elements and this day would prove to be no exception. A cold chill that seemed to creep out of the reaches of the Arctic was amplified by wind gusts swooping off of the waterfront shooting through the trees and blowing down most anybody kickflipping or even pushing along the frigid cement. Relentless as it may have been, the weather couldn't keep Hometown down. The show must go on.

Amidst the chill factor, we opened up on the curved ledge. Tricks like back tails to fakie and SSBSTS's (switch stance backside tailslides) were dropped all over the place. The man emerging would be Adam Emery, busting out a BS 180 and a half-cab over the bar and the sweetest smith to fakie on the curved ledge.

The next obstacle was just steps away, but felt like miles. The wind factor stepped it up as the shredding itself kicked it up a notch. The ledge-to-tabletop makes for a serious trial by fire for these contenders. Despite all the wind, Adam certainly busted out again with all kinds of backside variations. Seriously, everything he could think of: lipslide, nosegrind, crooked grind, and 5-0's. Jonathan Perillo battled the wind for a good ten minutes but finally pulled off an absurd nose manual to nollie flip out as if it were a page ripped out of the textbook of skateboarding. I guess when you are ready to pull it off, make it classy.

The rock gap would be the final nail in the coffin that is this Bay City HH event. The extensive history of this gap includes such names as Cairo Foster, Brian Anderson, and Brandon Westgate. So in no small way it was time to get busy. Trick after trick got dropped by Zack Kovacs including a tuck-knee, kickflip, ollie one-foot. Adam Emery stepped it up straight out of the gates with a clean hardflip. But again, Jonathan Perillo waits till the last minute to pull off the most perfect 360 flip that the bay has seen in decades.

With sweeping winds in the faces of all the contestants, streets feeling as cold as ice and no shortage of exhausted skaters, the victory went to Adam Emery. Adam killed each obstacle without pause in his schralpage. Second goes to Jonathan and third to Zack. All in all, a harsh day for shredding but a sick day for for the Hometown rippers.
