The MediaEval benchmarking initiative http://www.multimediaeval.org/ is devoted to evaluation of new algorithms for video access and retrieval and is open to any research group interested in participating. In particular, MediaEval focuses on speech, language and contextual aspects of video. In 2011, we'll be offering tasks that will include tagging, geo-tagging and at least one other cool challenge (to be announced early Spring 2011).
In MediaEval 2010, one of the challenges we addressed was an "Affect Task" in which we tried to automatically predict the level of boredom or engagement felt by a general audience when watching Internet video. We analyzed a travelogue series by filmmaker Bill Bowles http://www.mynameisbill.com/.
Bill attended our MediaEval 2010 workshop, listened to our findings and made a MediaEval trailer for us in the style of one of his travelogue episodes. He tells the story of the MediaEval benchmarking initiative in his own words. Watch and form your own opinion of what it takes to make Internet video engaging for a general audience.
