thanks - great video - but i am sure i am missing something - we cant figure out what triggers the release? something at launch? or wind action after? clearly there isnt a big finger up there?

I just want to ask.. With all these weight, can this rocket still fly perfectly? Because I am tasked to make one that would stay in air for a long time.
Can someone please answer quickly :) Thanks

Thanks for showing how the flap works. It was surprisingly hard to find a video explaining how it works.

you should show it fly! these are some pretty cool ideas that I have to try!
the hole was an experiment. It worked fine but you technically don't need the hole. It allowed the rocket to fall faster so it didn't drift forever away but slow enough not to damage the rocket. The hole could have been a little bit smaller=) Good luck!

As the rocket takes off, there is so much force that the wind rushing by pushes the lock down. Since the wind is rushing by very fast, it acts as the "new lock" holding the wind flap in place until is slows down enough at or near apogee allowing the wind flap to flip up thus releasing the nose cone containing the parachute. Good luck!

With wind flap is held down due to the rush of air passing by as a result of the rockets speed. As the rocket slows down at apogee, it slows down enough for the rubberbands to pull the wind flap up releasing them and pulling the nose cone off. Its genious and really awesome when it works. The key is to set the rubberbands just right so they are weak enough for the wind to hold the flap down but strong enough to pull it up when they aren't fighting the force of the wind. It took me several tries.
