  • Last summer I took a trip down to Cowes in the Isle of Wight to see a smaller 80ton cantilever crane. I've been lucky enough to see the 250tonner cantilever crane on the Tyne at work (the last remaining of 3 we used to have) and would love to see the Titan at Clydebank. How much is it to get in?

  • Hi , thanks for the comments. It cost £5 to get in. From what I remember it will not be open again until spring. When I visited I was on for as long as i wanted. I could go up and down the lift as often as i wanted. It was great.

  • The Cowes cantilever crane was built by Babcock & Wilcox on the banks of the River Cart in Renfrew

  • the titan crane was first designed to lift 100 ton couple a years later it was upgraded to lift 150 ton it was reinforced with extra steel girders to increase capacity. again couple of years later it was upgraded to lift 250 ton

  • Just to clarify re the giant cantilever cranes there was 6 of them on the Clyde between 1932 and the early 1970s. One of them, at Dalmuir, was demolished in the early 1970s and the other (at BVT Govan ex Fairfields) in 2007.

  • Other famous ships from Clydebank included the former Royal Yacht Britannia, the battle cruiser HMS Hood and Britain's last battleship HMS Vanguard. The Clydebank yard built over 700 ships over a period of just under a century - around half during John Brown's ownbership and the oter half during the termof the original owners - J & G Thomson.

  • As well as QE2 and theQueen Mary and Queen Elizabeth, the earlier Cunard liners Lusitania and Aquitania also came from Brown's the later regarded by many as the most beautiful line ever.
