You people are fucked, I know virtually nothing about this woman, but this is a perfectly reasonable response. Of course the vast majority of people who have a gay child are going to be a little disappointed. Just because you, a member of a tiny minority, isn't, does not mean the vast majority of people are wrong.

Of course there is no justification for holding a grudge or intervening, but there is all the reason in the world for being honest with yourself and admitting you wanted grandchildren

The advice doesn't seem that bad. She's telling him to come out of the closet despite what his mother wants and to give his mom a break for being a flawed human. Big deal. Yes, the tone is obnoxious, but everyone who calls her expects that. It's a radio show, not therapy. And the guy doesn't even need therapy. It sounds like all he needed was someone to point out that his mother is embarrassed and that that's her problem, not his.

@Jazsy There is a concept called "therapeutic communication" that health care professionals are trained in. They are supposed to be supportive of the client rather than harsh, judgemental and pretending to know the one best answer for the client. The client is supposed to make their own decision and the therapist is supposed to compassionately help the client find their own best answer.

@CalifaJohn I'm glad you said that, because my next question was: How on God's green earth did she ever became a psychiatrist, psychologist, therapist, or anything that exists in the "ist" family?! Knowing that makes total sense. I'm thinking "Any hack could talk down to people, and act like they are the end all be all of knowledge on human relationships without a shred of evidence, and now I see that she pretty much is "any hack".

@Jazsy Yes, that is the most irritating thing about Dr. Laura. She is so snippy and self-assured that her conclusion is the only correct one. Let's keep in mind that she is a licensed (not degreed) Marriage and Family COUNSELOR. She is not a psychiatrist nor is she a psychologist. She really should drop the title "Dr." as it relates to her advice program because her Ph.D. in PHYSIOLOGY does not apply to the work she is doing. It is out of context and used inappropriately making it deceptive

I don't generally like Dr. Laura, but she might be right about the mother wanting the son to stay closeted because of her own embarrassment. However, that is not the only possibility. Dr. Laura seems unaware that there may be a danger of physical attack by the father. Fathers sometimes kill sons over this. Dr Laura is being negligent toward this young man's safety by disregarding the possibility of physical attack.

Women have allot to learn in this country. First, women shall take care of the home, treat men like a king, make dinner every evening, give her husband a massage, agree with everything the man says, do the laundry, show respect at all times, make him comfortable, make coffee and pie every evening, speak in a sweet, soothing voice, be fresh looking and clean before he comes home, light a fire in the fireplace, give him a bath, cut his toenails and soap his arm.
