  • i disagree. it is no longer morally acceptable to be racist, sexist, etc. but when it comes to animals, it is totally fine to eat animals/animal byproducts. i mean, look at thanksgiving coming up. turkey. not only acceptable but promoted to eat. you would never see swastika promoted on haunaka (sp). altho discrimination still exists among humans, it is discouraged, whereas eating animals is encouraged if anything.

  • Hi StopMeatGoVeg, Maybe I misunderstood but I don't think anyone said anything about racism, sexism etc being acceptable. Animals are property, that's because society is speciesist. That needs to be addressed. Speciesism = racism = sexism = heterosexism . If there is one sort of discrimination, there will be all sorts.

  • @LiveVegan Right, but what I'm saying is at about 3 and a half minutes you said as long as racism, sexism, heterosexism is tolerated, so to will speciesism. I disagree in that our society no longer accepts those discriminations of human rights but fully accepts and promotes speciesism. I think people can accept other races, genders, sexual preferences more easily, because at the end of the day, they're human like them, whereas animals are not human, which they use to justify their diets, etc.

  • Hi Stopmeatgoveg, Unfortunately, despite the fact that it may be illegal to have a human slave, or lynch someone due to race, or kill women, or kill gay people, it still happens. Epidemic proportions of woman are raped, abused and murdered each year globally. Gay people are still murdered, and people from other races are murdered.

Animals are chattel property, so we live in a deeply speciesist society, but we also live in a deeply sexist society as well. The difference is (cont'd)

  • cont'd to StopMeatGoVeg, it's not illegal to kill nonhumans. Only until animals are no longer property status, that animal use will end. And that will only happen, when speciesism is seriously addressed in society. The way to address it is for us to become vegan, to educate others to become vegan and then when society is less speciesist, real change can start to begin.

  • how is it possible to kill thoses magnificient creatures...

  • Hi Apedemak8, One word - speciesism. Until society is educated that species is an irrelevant criterion as to whether nonhumans should belong to the moral community, just as sex, race, sexual orientation is an irrelevant criterion, then animals will continue to be property. The best action we can take is to become ethical vegans, educate ourselves on the abolitionist approach AbolitionistApproach(dot)com and then educate others.
