I've never seen nerves break down an individual like it did Nicole Bobek. She was one of my favorite skates (Michele Kwan being my favorite) and loved to see her skate. She had a really good theatrical presence when she skated. I was really routing for her at the 1998 Olympics but after Nationals she just REALLY broke down and could not land ANYTHING. I was amazed to see her land triple lutz and flips in her past perfomances but couldn't understnad why she could BARELY land them again. NERVES!
Her lutz was gigantic--much bigger than Kwan's--and I'm always felt she actually had more extension on her spiral than Michelle. However, she had no combinations and her last two jumps weren't very good so she shouldn't have placed ahead of her.
Thanks for posting this! This was a very great program overall! HUGE triple (f)lutz. Strong spins, especially that flying camel in the beginning.
I'm not sure if you have the artistic program from this event, but I would have placed her 2nd overall. Yuka was boring as usual, and when you compare the jumps completed, Nicole was better.
I'll upload the event at some point if you don't have the rest. :)
