it doesnt work if you over fill it usually. it wont explode if you dont seal it up. love mre's. it doesnt need to be in card board box either. if you take the chem board out of about 4-6 of them and break it up then shove into 20 oz bottle with half cup of water seal cap and shake then toss wait for super load bang then approach. bottle will grow greatly till it explodes. lots of fun.

@FixedByDoc Perhaps I can take an MRE just for fun next time since I went "No Cook" on my last trip. Thanx for the MRE info.

Looks like a good time, Dad! Might I recommend the freeze dried meals where you just add hot water and wait for 10 minutes??

@tiffhiker I've used those but find the dinners like Knorr and Lipton better tasting. They just take some extra cooking time but I've been able to limit that by using a lid after I've cooked them about half way.

The Mt. house scrambled eggs and bacon are pretty good,havent tried the entrees yet.When I take the knorr i usually mix a package of tuna and idahoan flavored mashed potatoes w/ them,very filling.

@ tifhiker, That's my usual fare, but went for the mre on this trip. (I have two more to try) Never been much for hauling "real" food around with me 8-) Mountain House doesn't come with the little snacks that mre's do however.
