No, it is not expected that a practitioner will get it right the first time. But definitely the body gets flexible over the time. One does have to do it at the rate at which body can take it though.
Besides Vajrasan is definitely not just for slender ppl. Have you seen the japanese(both fat & slim) traditionally sit in Vajrasan during their family gatherings and tea drinking sessions.

Alot of the exercises I can't seem to reach into completely guess it's just for slender built people.
