She couldn't afford to pay someone to pick her son up from school and get him to the babysitter. It was a strain at her job for her to rush around at 3:30 pm trying to get her son to the babysitter. She seemed pretty unhappy about her brother asking her for money. They tried not to have to pay for a plumber. I do love this movie though, it was a real little gem.

I don't think there was anything in this movie to suggest Laura Linney was struggling financially. She owns a house outright and she has a steady job at a bank.

You know you can act if you don't look like you're acting at all. Laura is one of the few actresses who acts with so much nuance that she doesn't look like she is acting at all!
