Note: due to rendering of points, please watch the HD version, else you'll only see a blurry mess!

Galaxy model generated procedurally for the MMO Infinity :
http://www.infinity-universe.com/

This is a work-in-progress and does not necessarily represent the final result.

This is a visual representation of what's happening on the server side, so there's no fancy rendering or effects ( those will be added to the client later on ). Each star system is represented as a colored dot similar to stars in reality: hot blue stars ( O class ), Sun-type stars ( G class ), red dwarves ( K & M ), etc..

The model is generated procedurally on the fly in real time as the player moves. It's based on an octree.

Procedural generation does NOT mean that everything is random, in fact quite the contrary: if you come back at the same coordinates, you will exactly see the same stars !

  • Looks amazing!

Only a few things left to do: The Magellans, and nebulae.

    BTW how many stars generated?

  • I don't think it's possible to get a count of the stars due to the hierarchical nature of the system of procedural generation.

  • If wikipedia is to be believed, there are going to be some 200 BILLION star systems (not counting how many freakin planets are at each one). To put this into perspective, if you went down to your local beach and counted each sand particle, it would prolly be half this number...

And this is suppose to be a game?! Geez, I hate modern MMO's NOW cause I cant see everything. It would take multiple lifetimes to explore everything...at least its got resale...

  • If you assume there are 4 grains of sand per cubic millimeter, 200 billion grains of sand works out at about 4 cubic meters of sand.

Still a lot but not quite a beach full.

  • You're not supposed to explore everything. This isn't a 90's console game with levels that you can fully explore, this is a galaxy simulating game. It allows you to explore as much as you want without ever running into walls.

  • Just like the real Milky Way, About ~100 Billion to 400 Billion stars!

Since ive missed the client ICP ill be waiting for another one or beta anything so i can help !! been playing pc game for over 10 year and a tons of mmo and what ive seen into urs have the best potential u dont even know right now!!! Dont screw it !!!

  • This is awesome :D

If ur bigged by NOOBZ and have a good ship and some time, you can warp to a star system no one discovered yet and can peacefully build your base without any retards :D

This is going to be the best MMO ever

  • Add a custom ship builder and you have your GOTYAY.

  • one thing.

things in space don't stay in the same place. everything moves. so it would make more sense that when you come back at the same coordinates it actually would have MOVED a bit....you know...everything is moving ?

  • Finally, a chance to play my Windows Screensaver! You should use it as an AD for the game... first the screensaver then BOOM BABY! HOW ABOUT THAT?

  • "Billions and billions." - Carl Sagan

  • @InfinitySupport i like sand

  • @MrJosh4740 -- It's going to be a long time. We probably won't "destroy" ourselves but the public just doesn't have the taste, the vision, and the intelligence to want to do anything really great.

Look at the moon landing project 40 years ago. Congress cancelled the last 3 missions and hasn't sent them back because it hasn't been important to the people.

The U.S. public cares more about Miley Cyrus' hair color than exploring space.

(Miley Cyrus is cool ... but she's not THAT important) :-)

  • Wonder when humanity will start travelling around the galaxy, if we dont destroy us first

  • Sagan would cry tears of joy
