Ni no Kuni (二の国) is a JRPG that was released in November of 2011 in Japan. It will be released in North America and Europe in 2012. The developer is Level 5, and the game is a collaboration with Studio Ghibli. The overseas publisher will be Namco Bandai.

This game is very deceptive. It sells itself as a "for all ages" romp with the bright, childish graphics and characters, but the gameplay itself is surprisingly deep. There are a number of tactical considerations in play during battle, and I don't really think this game is suited for young kids.

Namco Bandai has to market this carefully, I think. It's a tough sell to older gamers due to the childish themes, but it is too difficult for young kids (many of whom don't have PS3s anyway). I know how -I- would sell it, but I'm curious as to what NB's marketing department comes up with.

The fate of this franchise is in your hands, though. Foreign demand will either transform this into a cult hit or a forgotten failure. I'm not far enough in to give my final say on the matter. All of the tactical depth in the world doesn't mean JACK if a game is too easy. The first boss was fun, and I'll play some more soon. The strange thing is that, if the game does indeed prove to be difficult, it fails as a product for young kids... and somehow redeems itself for the hardcore JRPG fans.

Ok, I've basically written a novel now, so I'll stop. Leave a like or a comment if you want another preview vid for this (or request another JP only game if you want). I'm not starting the hype train yet, but if I find a boss that I can't beat in one attempt.......

EpicNameBro, signing out ya'll hell yea

PS- How Japanese is this game? It has the voice actors' pictures on the back....

  • I am buying a PS3 solely for this and many more JRPGS coming in the future and previous. What would you rate it out of 10?

  • @TheRetawes I don't like putting a number on games. I would say it's a great game that I enjoyed a lot, though

  • @EpicNameBro Well would you say it is one of the best RPGs you've played on PS3?

  • @TheRetawes Yes, easily. I would say that it is the best traditional RPG I've played since.... a long time. I can't remember the last new "old school" JRPG I enjoyed like this.

  • @giz300 nah

  • I'd have to say, this game ranks up with my anticipation level that Skies of Arcadia gave me. And that is still my personal favourate RPG of all time. I'd love to see more if you've recorded more (I saw the part 2 vid as well, btw). Definitely a must buy when it gets ported over to North America. Great vid and commentary, as well mate. Keep up the good work.

  • AWESOME GAME...STUDIO GHIBLI love their work
